Child support explained

Child support is about the kids, not the other parent. How it's worked out in Australia, and the things every dad should know.

Money

Child support is about the kids, not about the other parent. Seeing it that way takes a lot of the heat out of it.

In Australia, child support is assessed by Services Australia using a set formula under the Child Support (Assessment) Act 1989. The formula looks at:

  • both parents' taxable incomes

  • how many nights each parent has the children

  • the number and ages of the children

  • other children each parent supports.

Parents can also make their own arrangement, either privately or through a formal child support agreement.

Things every dad should know

  • Time and money are separate. You can't stop paying because you're not seeing the kids. The other parent can't stop you seeing the kids because of unpaid child support.

  • Keep your income details up to date. If your income drops, tell Services Australia straight away so your assessment can be reviewed. Backdating is limited.

  • Care changes matter. If the number of nights the kids spend with you changes, report it.

  • You can ask for a change of assessment in special circumstances, such as high costs of contact or a child's special needs.

  • Keep receipts for school fees, medical costs and other direct payments.
